The Black Britannia Photographic Project
In 2007 I began this ‘Black Britannia’ photographic portrait series attempting to raising awareness for the achievements and great work that many black Britons had contributed to the UK over the last five decades. I began this solo portrait project due to constant and ever-present negativity and general bad press the Afro-Caribbean community seem to be attracting at that time. I knew there were many good people, Black Britons, who has broken through into public life and who where making great strides in their chosen professions.
I wanted to celebrate and spotlight 50 individuals from all walks of life would had broken through 'the glass ceiling' and who where, if not intentionally, role models for their community. From schoolteachers to lawyer's, surgeon's to architects, actors to supermodels to judges and dancers plus many more. I was very fortunate to have the then UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown open and launch my first exhibition at London's City Hall before it toured the rest of the UK.
